Long exposure photography involves using a long duration shutter speed. This part is pretty self explanatory. However, just leaving the shutter open for endless amounts of time does not represent a long exposure, in the sense that we’re trying to learn here. Long exposure photography in this class has two elements. It is about using that long duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements in your image, while blurring or obscuring the moving elements. If I leave the shutter open in a dark room for 10 minutes and nothing is moving, it does not make it “long exposure photography”.  It’s all about combining movement with stationary elements. Think of waterfalls that are shot at 1/4 second. The water blurs while the rocks and trees remain sharp.

We’re going to learn about the filters you’ll need, calculations you’ll have to make, apps that can help you, and the step by step process in the field that will ensure you keep mistakes to a minimum, and you’ll make the best use of your time in the field.
